SLANT-LID DESK

Probably Connecticut, late 18th century.

With a triple-fan carved valance, multi-drawer interior, centering a wooden clock-work mechanism, which activates a serpent with pointed tongue, to guard against unauthorized entry.

The ogee bracket feet of typical Newport formation with the straight inner edge but slightly broad for the case proportion. The interior with a  row of  drawers below pigeon holes, and a typical Rhode Island shell in the center door.

With pierced vase-shaped splat, block-and-turned side stretchers, front legs terminating on ball and claw feet.

FEDERAL CHERRY CASED TALL CLOCK
Eight-day Weight Powered, Time and Strike Brass Movement Massachusetts, Circa, 1800

The elaborately inlaid cherry case features cyma curve line inlay on the frieze above the arched and glazed hood door flanked by brass stop fluted, free-standing columns, barber pole inlay frames a rectangular waist door with cut corners, book- end, banded, fan, and line inlays with central paterae flanked by brass stop fluted quarter columns, and the base with banding, alternating dark and light, fans and central paterae inlays on an ogee bracket foot base.

Painted iron dial with floral spandrels, Roman numerals, recessed date dial, second's dial and moon's age in the arch mounted to an eight-day brass movement with rack and snail hourly strike and recoil escapement powered by two weights and regulated by a pendulum.

MAHOGANY ROXBURY TALL CASE CLOCK BY AARON WILLARD
Massachussetts, circa 1800.

An attractive mahogany tall case clock by Aaron Willard, Boston, circa 1800. This classic example of a formal Roxbury case features brass stop fluted columns and ogee bracket feet, retains its original label with set-up instructions, period weights, pendulum, winding key and finials.

The painted iron dial with birds and floral spandrels, Roman numerals, recessed date dial, second's dial. The dial is signed below the calendar, "Aaron Willard, BOSTON". Eight-day brass movement with rack and snail hourly strike and recoil escapement powered by two weights and regulated by a pendulum.

SAILOR'S WOOLWORK:

Embroidering ship portraits was one of the crafts practiced by sailors during
long voyages in the 19th century.
Many seamen were adept at sewing, a skill required to mend sail or clothing.

RARE QUILT MADE OF TOBACCO SILKS
 (American, Early 20th C.)
Silks From The American Tobacco Company
Beautifully stitched tobacco quilt, made from silk patches from the American Tobacco Company, founded by James Buchanan Duke.

The small 1” x 3” collectible tobacco silks were found in cigarette packages, while 3” x 5” silks were premiums earned with coupons.  These silks were made from an assortment of materials: silk satin, a combination of silk and cotton, cotton sateen, or simple woven cotton.  They were embellished with polychrome prints and the tobacco company name.  The prints were often part of a series such as flags, Native American chiefs, military leaders, popular entertainers, animals, butterflies, and pin-up beach girls from named resort locations. (This quilt includes several silk patches of the brunette from Nantucket among bathing beauties.) 
 
Condition: Excellent condition, colors of prints vivid and well preserved. Framed in plexiglas.

A FINE 18TH CENTURY MASSIVE GILDED CARVED WOOD EAGLE
Southern European, probably Italian.

The eagle stands with wings outstretched and head turned downward; it was meant to be raised above the viewers. Based on the method of carving, it was probably a lectern. It features a strong and rather robust body and feet resting on a rock.
